CBD Oil for Dementia, How Does it Work?
Is CBD oil for dementia a viable alternative or is it all a myth? Treating dementia is no easy feat.
Research is looking into the possibility of CBD oil as a treatment option for dementia and other neurological diseases with minimal side effects.
Does CBD for Dementia Work?
Cannabidiol (CBD) is a major cannabinoid. A cannabinoid is a chemical substance that is extracted from the cannabis plant. It can produce different effects on the human body when consumed or ingested.
CBD, unlike tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), does not give any feeling of euphoria or “high” after consumption. It provides relief from most types of pain and inflammations.
Although research has not confirmed CBD as a treatment or cure for dementia, studies have shown its potential in the treatment of symptoms of the disease such as agitation, aggression, depression, anxiety, and mood swings.
In this age of medicinal advances, CBD is quickly getting recognition as a potential cure for numerous health and medical conditions. These include insomnia, depression, inflammatory diseases, chronic pain, epilepsy and seizures, multiple sclerosis, and anxiety.
It is important to understand the differences between dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. It is also important to understand the differences between these two and the other disorders mentioned above.
What is the Difference Between Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease?
While these two terms are often interchanged, they differ from each other. Dementia is also known as the “umbrella term.” People use the term dementia to encompass a group of brain disorders that impair memory, thinking ability or reasoning.
Alzheimer’s disease is just one of these disorders. There are different forms of dementia which include Parkinson’s disease, Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, and Lewy Body Dementia (LBD).
Common symptoms of onset dementia are:
- Significantly decreased attention span and focus
- Severe changes in the ability to communicate
- A continuous decrease in memory skills
- Uncharacteristic thinking and/or language
- Affected sense of reasoning and judgment
Dementia differs from chronic pain disorders such as arthritis and gout. Gout is an inflammatory form of arthritis that is characterized by red, hot, tender and swollen joints. It also differs from inflammatory diseases such as coeliac disease and asthma because it directly alters brain function.
Hereditary factors are the most compelling possibility for dementia causes. Experts are still exploring other possibilities as the root causes of dementia are not yet determined. Research continues in search of a cure for these disorders.
CBD and Common Symptoms of Dementia-related Disorders
No recorded document states that any CBD products are an effective cure for dementia.
However, it can reduce the severity of the symptoms associated with dementia-related disorders such as anxiety and mood swings.
There is no record or evidence of medical experts administering THC content to patients suffering from dementia.
CBD products of high pharmaceutical grade, on the other hand, can be administered to patients to relieve symptoms associated with the disorders.

Dementia forms usually begin at the age of fifty and are equally debilitating. Some of them include Lewy Body Dementia (LBD). This is a type of dementia stemming from an unusual buildup of protein alpha-synuclein in the brain cortex. This is the part responsible for learning and memory.
The earliest symptoms include reduced attention span and light to a medium loss in body coordination. Due to these symptoms, LBD can be mistaken for Parkinson’s disease in its initial stage. Advanced symptoms of Lewy Body Dementia are hallucinations, memory loss, and irregular sleeping patterns.
Vascular Dementia, on the other hand, is the most common form of dementia in the United States of America.
It usually occurs after severe trauma to the brain or a stroke from damages or blockages in blood vessels. This does not allow adequate blood flow to the brain.
In place of memory loss, the initial symptoms of vascular dementia are difficulties in the planning and/or thinking abilities of the patients. Alternative names of this disease are Multi-Infarct Dementia and Post-Stroke Dementia.
Alzheimer’s Disease is from a buildup of fiber bundles and protein amyloids (“plaques”) in the brain. This results in the blocking of the processing of neural signals and subsequent damage of nerve cells. A common symptom is a slight memory loss that gets worse with the passage of time.
The following symptoms are confusion, disorientation, constant reduction in communication ability, and mood swings. Although Alzheimer’s disease is not impossible to fully diagnose, a sequence of tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs) deduce the probability of the degree.
In a research study, CBD oil was administered to mice with signs of Alzheimer’s disease. The mice did not only show less evidence of amyloid accumulation but also showed improvements in cognitive ability.
Types of CBD Products to Use
The most common CBD product is CBD oil. Consumers can find CBD in other forms such as edibles, balms, topicals, and salves.
Some benefits of CBD include:
- Providing relief in terms of pain, inflammations and/or infections.
- Reducing anxiety, depression, and stress.
- Improving sleep
- Reducing pain in nerves.
The best form of CBD is CBD oil because the body absorbs it faster and delivers is straight to the bloodstream.
Dosage of CBD Oil for Dementia
The biggest factors to consider when deciding on the dosage to administer to a patient are the person’s age, weight, height, and the severity and stage of his/her disease. A qualified physician will be able to determine the correct micro standard and macro dosages considering these factors.
Simply, you can measure CBD dosages using Leinow and Birnbaum’s “step-up method,” which is starting the patient at 1-2 mg in the first week and then moving up to 2-4 mg every subsequent week until there is a noticeable change.
CBD oil for dementia is not a certified cure or treatment. Several independent studies have shown its potential in reducing behavioral symptoms of any disease.
It can also increase the patient’s quality of life. Nevertheless, we advise users to do their due diligence and research on the possible psychoactive effects of CBD products with 0.3% THC in them.
