What is the Difference Between Hemp and CBD?

Brands can market CBD products under different names, but that doesn’t mean they’re all the same. A classic case of this is between hemp products and CBD products. Consumers, especially first time users, can be misled.

While CBD and hemp are closely related, there are some key differences that distinguish the two. When it comes to medical marijuana, thorough knowledge of the subject can help readers identify which one is best for them.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is one of the two major cannabinoids.

A cannabinoid is a chemical compound that is derived from the cannabis sativa plant. There are two (2) major naturally occurring cannabinoids in the cannabis plant: tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

CBD contains a lot of antioxidants and does not have the potential of being addictive after long term use. It has been proven to be one of the safest cannabinoids in existence.

What is CBD Oil?

CBD oil is made by the extraction of CBD from the cannabis sativa plant. It is then diluted with a carrier oil such as hemp seed oil or coconut oil. It is commonly ingested by placing a few drops beneath the tongue (sublingually).

There a quite a number of health benefits of CBD oil, including:

  • Relieving pain
  • Reduce cancer symptoms
  • Minimize acne and inflammation
  • Reduce stress, anxiety, and depression
  • Protect the brain from neurodegenerative diseases
  • Promote heart health

CBD is a powerful antioxidant, antipsychotic, and anti-tumor agent.

How to ingest CBD

The most common way of ingesting CBD oil is sublingual. This means that a few drops of the oil are placed beneath the tongue and it is absorbed directly into the bloodstream through the arteries and capillaries present there.

This method is the most effective and also the fastest since it goes directly into the bloodstream. It is also possible to use CBD oil while cooking because most people do not tolerate the earthy taste of it. CBD oil, however, has a low evaporation temperature so it cannot be used as a substitute for vegetable oil.

It can also be vaped or smoked using an electronic cigarette. It can be applied topically to soothe skin irritations. Other ways of ingestion are capsule supplements, chewing gum, and drinks like coffee.

Side Effects of CBD

In as much as CBD oil has proven to be very beneficial in terms of a person’s health, it has been proven to have various side effects on the person using it. These effects depend on the person as some people have greater sensitivity to its effects. Some of the side effects of CBD oil are:

  • Lightheadedness
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Unsettled stomach
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Dysphoria (a state of unease)

What is Hemp Oil?

It is an extract that is from the seeds of the hemp plant. Hemp oil can be taken from all cannabis genus plants.

This hemp type is produced in industries and it contains a minimal amount of psychoactive substances such as THC. It can be used for a variety of purposes such as cooking as it can create a crispy and nutty taste. It can be a good substitute for olive oil in salads.

Hemp oil can be used as biodiesel fuel, be added in the production of lotions, some foods, and also soaps. Another interesting use of hemp oil is that it is a natural moisturizer after baths.

Side Effects of Hemp Oil

Hemp oil is very beneficial medically and at times it is safer than traditional medicines because traditional medicines can have more severe side effects. Hemp oil, however, is not devoid of side effects and most of these effects are unexpected. Having prior knowledge of these can be very useful.

Hempseed oil can lead to digestive problems such as stool softening or diarrhea in people who are prone to having disorders related to bowel movements.

When it is exposed to severe heat, hemp oil tends to produce peroxides which are harmful to the body. Once the temperature of the hemp oil exceeds 121 degrees Fahrenheit, the polyunsaturated fat present in hemp oil breaks down into harmful peroxides. These compounds damage the skin and vital organs after exposure.

In people who are very sensitive to THC, hemp oil can still cause psychoactive effects in those individuals.

CBD Oil vs. Hemp Oil

Hemp and marijuana are closely related in terms of plants but marijuana contains a higher THC level than hemp. The hemp plant usually has a composition of 0.3% THC while the marijuana plant can contain up to 30% THC.

Conversely, the composition levels of CBD in hemp oil are very low while in CBD oil, the CBD content level can go up to 15%. Most hemp products do not even contain any CBD while most CBD oil products do.

CBD oil

CBD oil is a very powerful anti-inflammatory antioxidant which is also an analgesic. It aids in relief from muscle aches, chronic pains, headaches, arthritis, and neuropathic conditions. It helps with skin conditions such as eczema, sunburn, and bug bites in tropical areas.

They interact with the body through the endocannabinoid system. You can also find different forms of CBD oil like full-spectrum, broad-spectrum, or isolates

Hemp oil

Hemp oil is obtained by cold pressing the seeds of the hemp plant and it is considered to be very medicinal. This oil can be used as a substitute for most cooking oils in the kitchen.

Hemp oil has high amounts of antioxidant content and it is present in most skincare products as well as food smoothies. CBD oil, on the other hand, is usually extracted from the stalk and/or stems and aerial flower parts of the cannabis plant.

Summary

Due to very strong research conducted which supports the numerous benefits of hemp oil, it has been rated above cannabis CBD oil in terms of its ease of use as well as its safety when ingested into the body. Although CBD oil has its benefits, the side effects it gives outweigh the positive sides of its use.

Hemp oil and CBD oil each have their benefits as well as their side effects. Hemp oil is high in vitamins E, B1 and B2, potassium, magnesium, and polyunsaturated fats and provides nutrition for the brain. It also promotes healthy hair growth as well as lower levels of blood fats.

CBD oil, on the other hand, is a food supplement that helps in treatments for bone growth, cancer cell growth, insomnia, and psoriasis. Since it’s not marketed as a medication, you can find CBD products in health food stores. However, CBD products are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent diseases.

Hemp-derived CBD products (with less than 0.3 percent THC) are legal on the federal level, but are still illegal under some state laws. Marijuana-derived CBD products are illegal on the federal level, but are legal under some state laws. Check your state’s laws and those of anywhere you travel.
